Responding to Questions Against Racism
Ask the questions you’ve always wanted to about faith and racial justice, and have the hard, ongoing conversations we need for real change
Monday 29th September, 6pm-9pm, Community Wellbeing Hub, Reginald Terrace, LS7 3EZ
How can we work towards racial justice in our churches?
Join Leeds Church Institute and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland for an evening of community and conversation.
Our panel of church leaders will discuss the questions you asked at our Churches Against Racism event in 2024 about how denominations are taking action for racial justice, and the barriers to ecumenical cooperation.
We will engage with the questions Christians are asking in Leeds, to proactively seek racial justice in the Church.
Hear real responses from people at the forefront of responding to the urgent challenges facing the churches today.
Interculturalism, Faith, and Racial Justice
Learning to help our City thrive
Monday 6th October, 6pm-9pm, Community Wellbeing Hub, Reginald Terrace, LS7 3EZ
Leeds is a wonderfully diverse city, with a range of cultures and ethnicities making up our faith communities.
How can we celebrate this diversity well, and actively engage with people of cultures that are different to our own?
In this evening with Leeds Church Institute and Leeds Trinity University, you will learn how interculturalism, with its emphasis on understanding and interaction between people of different ethnicities, cultures and traditions, can help challenge racism and discrimination in our city.
The event will look at how interculturalism, faith and racial justice can help churches and local communities thrive.
Refreshments will be provided.
The Hook Lecture 2025
Prophet or Provider?
Tuesday 21st October, 7pm, Leeds Minster, Kirkgate, LS2 7DJ
Churches are increasingly being called upon to meet the urgent needs in our communities. But how do we balance this important work with the Christian call to be a prophetic voice for change?
Are handouts really the answer? How do we find time while pulling people out of the river, to go upstream and find out who is pushing them in?
For this year’s Hook Lecture, we welcome Jon Kuhrt to Leeds to explore our theme: is the church called to be ‘Prophet’ or ‘Provider’?
Jon Kuhrt is the Chief Executive of Hope into Action, a national Christian charity partnering with churches to provide homes for people who have been homeless.
United Against Poverty in Leeds
Shared Resources : Shared Responsibility
Monday 3rd November, 10am-3pm, Headingley Stadium, LS6 3BR
Join us for United Against Poverty in Leeds, a dynamic half-day event designed to spark systemic change through collective action.
Rather than focusing on funding or lobbying, this event explores how we can harness the shared resources already present in our communities to tackle poverty more effectively.
From faith and sport to community organisations and social justice advocates, this event welcomes a diverse audience committed to creating a more equitable Leeds.
Together, we’ll explore: What can we do—right now, with what we have—to reduce poverty and inequality in our city?
Creation Groans : Christ Calls
Grieve with creation, listen for the spirit, and commit together to walk in Christlike ways
7-9pm, Tuesday 18th November, Leeds Trinity University Chapel, Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth, LS18 5HD
In the face of climate breakdown, creation groans.
Together as Christians from across traditions, we are invited to listen to this cry, to bring our lament before God, and to seek Christ’s call to faithful action.
The evening will feature a talk from Rev’d Jon Swales MBE, Church of England priest and prophetic theologian, exploring cruciform adaptation—what it looks like to follow Jesus in a world of climate breakdown and societal fracture. Creative prayer stations will also offer space for lament, intercession, and hope.
Refreshments from 7 pm, Talk begins 7:30, Close 9 pm
Car parking available. Accessible by public transport.
All are welcome to join us as we grieve with creation, listen for the Spirit, and commit together to walk in Christlike ways.
Come As You Are: Waiting in Advent
An online day retreat for disabled Christians
Saturday 29th November, 10am-3.30pm, Online
You are invited to a quiet, reflective online retreat exploring the theme of waiting through the lived experience of disabled people and the season of Advent.
This is a gentle, spacious day created by disabled for disabled people. There is no pressure to be on camera, to speak, or to produce anything. Just time to rest, reflect, and be together.
We will share in readings, quiet creative practices, and theological reflections on waiting, not as a passive or frustrating absence, but as a deep act of presence, faith, and dignity.
