From ‘Naked Soles’ by Gbemisola Adeoti
Those who behead the mahogany
and leave the Iroko trunk
forsaken in the forest
those who from the root
cut the curling foresight of baobab
and rupture the promise of maple,
to them is never the last laugh.
The dying stump
will sprout in spring
the trees will rise again
like stilt dancers
casting long shadows
across meadows
the ironwood will mend
its saw-gashes
and scorch of the hearth.
From fiery February sun,
and rains of May
come the greenness of oak
in the fullness of time.
