In Luke’s Gospel, as Jesus is dying, the man dying on his right says ‘Remember me when you come into your kingdom’. As David Rhodes, author of Faith in Dark Places, points out, the man says when not if. And so he comments, “Jesus is allowed to die hearing on the lips of a total failure the only word of resurrection life that he was to hear.”
This radical comment on the text is one way in which David shows that in the Gospels and in everyday Leeds, the Good News is for the poor, with the poor and from the poor.
