Revd. Professor Frances Young came to Leeds to tell the story of her life with her son Arthur, and how his life has shaped her journey of faith.
Arthur has been severely disabled from birth. Frances talked of how the trauma, distress and delights of being Arthur’s mother challenged her understanding of God and humanity. She said “I saw my father in Arthur. My father was distinguished & it was shocking. Then I saw the parable of God as Father being in the son.” It was a talk full of honesty and vulnerability from an accomplished theologian.
Another striking aspect of the talk was where Arthur was described as “a man with a message” because he calls us to have a profound shift of perspective. This is part of his vocation.
