The Way Up Is Down

A Sculptural Installation by Leon Varga

In 2021, during the UK’s third national lockdown, Hungarian artist Leon Varga was the recipient of a small bursary, awarded to him by Leeds Church Institute.

The Way Up Is Down is the interactive kinetic artwork that emerged from Leon’s bursary, and explores some of the ways in which our lived experience of the Covid pandemic has fundamentally changed the spatial architecture of our social interactions.

The installation consists of three full-size working seesaws. Each one is fitted with seats repurposed from old ecclesiastical furniture and placed in relationship with three pairs of reclaimed long case clocks.

The artwork is made for interaction and immersion, and in engaging with it we are invited to think about the social hierarchies of space, and to reflect upon the ways that the past two years have reshaped our understanding of time. Also present in the work are themes of absence and loss and the ways in which family can both connect us to the past and launch us into our futures.

The exhibition will open at Left Bank Leeds on 18th April and will then visit several other venues across Leeds throughout May. Please follow @LCILeeds to keep up to date with this phase of the exhibition.

The exhibition viewing times at Left Bank are (no booking required):
