Although Britain’s immigration detention estate is one of the largest in Western Europe, what life is like inside an Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) & post-release into a community remains a mystery to most.

This is an opportunity to hear what women seeking asylum in the city of Leeds have to say about their detention & community experiences and visualise them in photography for impact. Seen through a visual lens on lived experience, images portray three key narratives: how detention serves to dehumanise people in search of sanctuary; how detainees resist unjust practices of detention & deportation; and how community-welcome benefits both residents and newcomers to a neighbourhood.

LCI have put in place measures to ensure visitors have a safe experience. We have limited the number of tickets available and all tickets must be booked in advance. Visitors will be asked to wear masks. Staff will also wear masks. A one-way system will be in place; hand-sanitising stations will be available and there will be thorough cleaning between viewings.
